 On the Edge

On the edge of what?  As diverse as our ministries are, you could be on the edge of just about anything.  But we want you to be on the edge of Lake Superior in beautiful Duluth at the end of October!  That is when camps from across the country will gather to Party, Pray and Practice.

The 2005 Outdoor Ministry Conference is once again taking place in our backyard, October 26-30.  Have you registered yet?  You certainly don’t want to miss out as we celebrate Outdoor Ministry, take time to center ourselves in God’s word and gain practical knowledge that we can take back to our sites and use to strengthen the ministry we do.

We are excited to have members from the Minnesota Institute for Contemplation and Healing (MICAH) joining us for this event.  Each morning MICAH members will lead us as we learn about and experience ancient prayer practices.  This time of quiet and reflection will help us to hear God’s call for our personal life as well as at our ministry sites.  We are often too busy to really hear the still, small voice of God – this is your chance to stop and listen.

Afternoons will be filled with workshops and activities which will hopefully give you the skills or knowledge to take God’s call and run with it.  One goal of the planning committee is to make this conference practical; to give participants concrete things they can use once they return home.

This is a conference not to be missed!  Take a break from the office and spend a few days listening, sharing, laughing, worshipping – we guarantee you’ll come away from this event renewed!  Come on, join us in Duluth - join us on the edge as we party, pray and practice!   Gretchen Bachman

Annual executive director’s fishing trip is more than catching fish

I recently had conversation with Arden Norum (former Luther Crest executive director), Michael Mackeben (Onomia) and Marcus Anderson (Luther Crest) about this year’s Executive Director’s Fishing Trip.  I learned that the annual fishing trip has been taking place for something like 25 years!  It began, way back when, as a meeting of ALC camping executives from northern Minnesota.  Now, it serves as a time of support, sharing of information, rejuvenation and (of course) fishing for the dedicated band of folks who show up each year.  This September, 13 executive directors from across the country gathered at LaBelle’s Birch Point Lodge on Rainy Lake for the better part of 5 days.  Arden has been attending the trip since its inception, and Michael and Marcus attended for the first time.  Though Michael and Marcus enjoyed the fishing (after all, Michael caught the most fish!), the conversations that took place in the boat, around the table and gathered together in the evenings became the draw that would bring them back.  Marcus summed it up well when he said “the fishing trip is what we’re all about – learning and growing in an outdoor setting.”  If you’re interested in learning more about next year’s trip, contact Arden Norum at 320-808-5501.   Ruth Dalager Buuck

A note from the Region 3 Gathering planning team...
"Many of you are experiencing number issues beyond the demographic ones - particularly if you are outside of major population areas, which most of us are. We hope to focus our December 5-8 gathering on marketing and creative programming and hopefully together find ways to turn this anxious topic into an exciting one. If you have things that are working well for you, or if you have topics, resources, resource people, or something you would like to present, please let me know."  Jon Hoyme, Shetek Lutheran Ministries
